There are different authentic perspectives of changing and learning from Genetic, to Cognitive, Behavioral, Psychodynamic, and Social Observational.
The most common tool we used to change other’s expectations is the use of verbal persuasion. We employ this as our first influence tool because not only is it enormously convenient (we carry our mouths with us everywhere), but it also serves us well because it works a great deal of the time. When people trust both our knowledge and our motives, they generally comply with our requests.
With persistent problems, it is best to give verbal persuasion a rest and try to help people experience the world themselves. Personal experience is the mother of all cognitive maps.
In 1961, an American Social Scientist Albert Bandura researched on Phobic’s and found a very interesting way of getting the desired change.
First they were given lectures (Verbal Persuasion), and couldn’t get them to conquer their fear through personal experience. They have to find “something in between”, something more than words and less than personal action. This “in between” thing turns out to be one of the most highly valued tools in any Influence Genius’s arsenal. It is referred to as “VICARIOUS EXPERIENCE”. “Vicar” is a Latin word means “To see”. Felt or undergone as if one were taking part in the experience or feeling of another. doing something, rather vicarious: experienced by watching, hearing or reading about someone else than doing it yourself. Observational learning (also known as : vicarious learning or social learning or modeling) is learning that occurs as a function of observing, retaining and replicating behavior observed in others. It is most associated with the work of psychologist Albert Bandura, who implemented some of the seminal studies in the area and initiated social learning theory. It involves the process of learning to copy or model the action of another through observing another doing it.
Here’s how vicarious experience works. When you expose subjects to other people who are demonstrating a vital behavior, the subjects learn from the surrogate’s successes and failures. Watching others in action is the next best thing to experiencing something on your own. People choose their behavior based on what they think well happen to them as a result. We can observe different ways of “Vicarious Experience” in daily routine life like, Watching WWE, Horror Movies, Pornography, reading Thrillers or listening Stories.
